Correspondence, 1906-1952, concerning genealogical research; genealogical files; writings and notes on historical subjects; newspaper clippings; and other papers of genealogist Nellie May (Hendricks) Moler of Shepherdstown, W. Va. Mrs. Moler corresponded extensively with persons all over the United States who were tracing relatives in West Virginia, western Virginia, and western Maryland. Significant correspondents include Levi Kelsey Cramb, Julia Angeline Drake, Sara Sullivan Ervin, Lillian Hayes Fisher, M.M. Lewis, Sumner Leroy Martin, James Ridgeley Orndorff, Oglesby Paul, Frank Crothers Shepherd, Louis Adrien Sigaud (concerning his book on Belle Boyd, and containing additional information about her), and J. Milton Williams. Families represented in the correspondence and files include: Harper, Hendricks, Hite, Martin, Orndorff, Shepherd, Strode, Swearingen, and many others. The writings, by Mrs. Moler and others, chiefly concern Civil War subjects, including the battles of Chickamauga and Hampton Roads, essays on the Confederate States Navy, and recollections of Jefferson Davis. Other topics include Dolley Payne (Todd) Madison and the debate over Andrew Jackson's birthplace. Other writers include William Price Craighill and Leonora Whitaker Wood. The newspaper clippings concern historical and local events in Bolivar, Charles Town, Harpers Ferry, Shepherdstown, and other places in Jefferson County, W. Va., and Morgantown, W. Va. Included is a published list of Jefferson County marriages, 1801-1885.

Belle Boyd was a Confederate spy. She was born Martinsburg, Virginia and imprisoned for spying in 1862 and 1863.
